Patagonia: From green apparel to greener food.
Perhaps no company on earth is more identified with helping the planet that Patagonia. Providing a shining example of “doing no unnecessary harm” Patagonia long ago stepped outside of its own walls to lead the industry in the shift to less harmful manufacturing techniques, as seen in their creation (along with Walmart) of the Sustainable Apparel Coalition.
Now Patagonia is turning its efforts to food, with Patagonia Provisions. As one might expect, all Patagonia Provisions foods are organic and sustainable. But even that is no longer enough to sustain a planet threatened by climate change, so Patagonia has again raised the bar by making a commitment to growing and manufacturing food in ways that help restore and maintain our soil.
Yvon Chouinard, Founder of Patagonia, affirmed: “Instead of waiting for some miraculous, high-tech solution to bail us out of our climate-change disaster, the real miracle turns out to be simply working with nature instead of against it. Our grasslands, and the soil beneath them, might just save the world.”
Working with The Carbon Underground, The Bread Lab at Washington State University, Wild Idea Buffalo and other partners Patagonia aims to use or develop ingredients that are grown in a regenerative manner that benefits the soil and the climate while providing delicious, healthy foods.
